Nickel is a common allergenic metal element. When the human body comes into long-term contact with nickel containing products such as electronic product metal casings and accessories, the nickel released by the products is likely to cause skin allergies. In order to reduce the health risks posed by nickel to consumers, Appendix XVII of the EU REACH regulation sets strict regulations on the amount of nickel released from products. EU member states are also highly concerned about the release of nickel from products. Since 2010, over a hundred products have been reported by the EU's non food consumer goods warning system (RAPEX) for violating regulatory requirements regarding nickel release, involving various products such as headphones and watches.

According to the REACH regulation, the nickel release of products should be tested using the standards developed by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). CEN recently released the standard EN 1811:2011+A1:2015, which made significant modifications to the conformity assessment procedure for nickel release. Compared to the previous version of the nickel release testing standard EN 1811:2011+AC: 2012, the new standard does not modify the testing method for nickel release. Instead, the measured values of nickel release classified as "uncertain" in the original standard are modified to "pass" or "meet" requirements. The specific provisions are as follows:
For non human puncture components with a nickel release rate of 0.5 μ g/cm2/week, if the measured value is less than 0.88 μ g/cm2/week, it is considered to meet the requirements;
For human puncture components with a nickel release rate of 0.2 μ g/cm2/week, if the measured value is less than 0.35 μ g/cm2/week, it is considered to meet the requirements;
Standards that conflict with the new standards should be abolished no later than January 2016.
